At nearly three hours long, you'd think it would be a slog, but it isn't... instead it is completely immersive... you get to appreciate the interconnected web of characters, the socio-economic background, the complex motives and all the while the story doesn't miss a beat... It feels tight and you can hold it entirely in your mind... It's never dull...
What other movies pull of a long running time well?

Older movies, especially the Biblical epics, were often longer. There wasn't the pressure to squeeze in screenings that there is today. Some good, long movies I've enjoyed include:
You can do a Google search for "good long movies" and find a bunch, but these are some I've enjoyed from start to finish.

Empire by Andy Warhol. It's 485 minutes long. I hear it's quite a ride. There is a 60 minute cut for wimps :p
You can check out the trailer here
Brace yourself.

nice suggestions guys... is the wharhol movie any good, or just long? i think he's pretty overrated to be honest.. emperors new clothes and whatnot...
its easy to make a long winded movie, much more difficult to make it feel tight and well composed... its getting to be a lost art, even some recent two hour movies feel tedious, Avengers Ultron comes to mind...
I liked The Good Shepherd, but you do feel the length of its duration... 2 hours and 47 minutes and you feel it...

It's just one static shot of the empire state building for 8 hours. I haven't seen it. I don't intend to.

Blood In, Blood Out (1993) - Excellent period crime drama
Love Exposure (2008) - Incredible cinematic journey. Cannot be categorized.
