Jane Campion's direction is top-notch, beautifully shot by Ari Wegner, and Johnny Greenwood's score fits like a soft leather glove. But that script - oh so Hollywood and oh so boring!! I want my 127 minutes back.

Couldn't agree more. Amazing cinematography but where was the tension or atmosphere? Very disappointing.

I'm surprised I watched it to the end. Not something I usually do when it's that boring. Although, I kept leaving the room to make a drink (alcohol helps I guess) or a snack - and always left the movie running LOL. Funny thing was, those absences didn't make a damn bit of difference to the plot.

Because the plot was complex and not straight and most importantly it was so above your level.

@sauceopet: Can you elaborate a bit more? Serious question. When I heard it was Oscar nominated (and I hadn't heard of it) I wanted to check it out. I made it 13 minutes in when it seemed soo obvious where this was going. I stopped watching to come here and check ratings and commentary. Funny thing is, I like all these actors, but something--and I would agree the script in particular--is not connecting in any way. These are great actors in the right parts, but it's ringing false and unless there is something worthwhile coming, I'm not going to finish it. I'd love to hear you elaborate on what is "complex...not straight...and above [our] level." I love great movies, so if there is something here, I'm in.

@Daddie0 : You're asking a troll (@sauceopet) that's been fed a diet of Hollywood pablum his whole life and wouldn't recognize complex if it bit him in the butt. I don't answer trolls, but I'll answer you: It is truly, very predictable. There is a kind of clever twist in the 3rd act but that's about as creative as it gets. I didn't turn it off not because of nominations, but because it's technically beautiful, including the acting. If you like that of sort of thing (I'm a photographer and actor so I do), then it's almost worth suffering through it. By the way, if you like great movies, my list of not-hollywood-films that I like is here: https://letterboxd.com/sirlaffalot/list/not-hollywood/

The script is all down to the direction too.
