... Excerpts from TMNT: MUTANT MAYHEM Set For $35M - $40M Debut; CinemaScore Revealed:
After the Seth Rogen-produced animated reboot took in a not-too-shabby $3.85 million from Tuesday preview screenings, the Heroes in a Half-Shell's latest big-screen adventure looks set to make between $35M and $40M over the course of its five-day domestic debut.
This may not sound particularly impressive when compared to, say, an MCU movie, but when you factor a relatively thrifty budget of $70 million (before marketing costs, granted), Mutant Mayhem is off to a pretty good start.
Plus, positive reviews and word-of-mouth could well propel the film past projections.
Mutant Mayhem is currently sitting at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, and has been awarded an A CinemaScore.

Solid numbers!
I'm particularly impressed they got this movie in the can for $70M — together with these sparkling reviews, it's poised to do well.

Well, with a budget of only $70 million it only needs $140-175 million to break even. It hasn't been released yet in many countries: Europe - e.g. France, Spain - , Latin America - e.g. Mexico, Brazil - , Asia- Pacific - e.g. Australia, South Korea, Japan, China.
If it doesn't break even, it wouldn't be as bad as for example "The Flash (2023)" and "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)". Tom Cruise' "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (20230" could bomb too as it's nearing the end of its theatrical run - worldwide box office (8 August 2023) is $493 million - while it needs $600-750 million to break even.

Hasn't managed yet to muster $2. Yikes.

It still has some time. Now (30 August 2023) the gross world box office is $136.8 million.
Before its release Paramount Pictures had already approved a sequel and together with Nickelodeon Movies they are also planning a two-season series - "Tales of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" - that will serve as a 'bridge' between the two movies.

Cool.
What's our working definition of "hit"? I don't think middling $2 ROI is enough for this kind of movie.

If you're only talking about money, then breaking even is not enough. It is not a hit when compared to the animated movies "The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)" and "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)". But If the production company is satisfied with the result, so that they don't cancel their plans for a sequel, then it is a (small) hit for them.
These are all computer-animated movies. As far as I know, there are no AI voice actors used, but real human ones. In the future the humans will be replaced by AI, what already is happening in video games.

Agree.
When it comes to animated movies, I really don't care who/how they're voiced. I'm not sure many do. So, if AI is used to create voices, well, as long as the character is interesting, fine. There are bad animated movies not saved by the real human voices in them, so what difference would it make to find out that the voices are not real humans? I mean, it's a cartoon, they're not real humans either.
That said, unions have quite a degree of entrenchment in labor relations. Any transition to full AI voices that take away union actor jobs is going to be slow.
