讨论 The Wizard of Oz

Item: The Wizard of Oz

Language: en

Type of Problem: Incorrect_content

Extra Details: The overview states, in the first sentence, "One of the most famous musical films and the first film from Hollywood to use color." That final half of that sentence, about this being Hollywood's first colour film, is definitely inaccurate, as there were multiple full-length Hollywood colour movies prior to this one. (I've seen at least two of them. Plus also have seen several other early Hollywood films that included colour segments inserted within otherwise b&w films.) So that part of the first overview sentence should be left out, about it being Hollywood's first colour film. The overview is presently locked, which is why I'm informing of the inaccuracy via this report.

Don't know if there should be one thread for content issues with one film but I'd figured I'd put my content issue here as it is also a major issue with the page.

tem: The Wizard of Oz

Language: en

Type of Problem: Incorrect_content

Extra Details: The only studio listed for the film is it's distributor, Loew's Incorporated. The entry does list the actual studio that produced it, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). That MGM was the production company behind the film is not only reinforced by Wikipedia and IMDB and countless other sources, but also by its status as MGM's most iconic film. This content like the rest of the page is locked at present which is why I have reopened this thread to report on this omission.

Wikipedia also says about Loew's; From 1924 until 1959, it was also the parent company of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios.

Maybe thats why. And I don't remember seeing an actual production credit from MGM when i watched this. Maybe they only paid shit to get it "in their hands" idk.

Ill see if i can rewatch (the credits) when im back from vacation!

Thanks for looking at this on your vacation time!

Just a few more thoughts based on my MGM digging. Loew's was the parent company because it owned the theater chains that showed MGM's films. They didn't actually produce the films.

While the credits to The Wizard of Oz confuse this issue by having a "Produced by Loew's Incorporated" next to the MGM logo on the title credit, this same distinction is made on other 1939 MGM releases (identified as such on TMDB) like NINOTCHKA (1939) and seems to have evolved from the earlier way the credits were displayed on such films as EVELYN PRENTICE (1934) where the credits look identical to Wizard of Oz except next to the MGM logo it says "Controlled by Loew's Incorporated", not produced.

It seems the fairest option would be to list Loew's Incorporated and MGM as the two studios responsible for Wizard of Oz. The logic that Loew's alone made Wizard of Oz would mean that in 1939 (and possibly the whole 1930s) MGM made no films which is demonstrably false.

Bump? baby_chick

@TroyPeterson fyi if you want to re-argue the issues discussed in a previous content issue report, it might be best to comment directly in the thread. But when you want to report a new issue, feel free to create a new report. smiley_cat

I still think we should only go with the actual production credit? I mean, I think this is just MGM offered their money and resources and Loew's Incorporated did the actual production. Just like lots of "20 century fox" etc not actual produced by fox. Studio vs production company.

"A film studio (like Disney) is a huge business that has established facilities and makes many, many, many films, TV shows, and other things. Often a film studio rents locations, and makes deals, with production companies to do projects. A production company might just produce one movie."

Thanks Google &_&

My apologies, I wasn't sure if it was a new thread for every new issue. The previous thread was about color.

It was impossible for Loew's to make movies as they were a theater chain that owned MGM and MGM made the films. While I respect the final decision of the mods, every respected source such as TCMDB lists MGM as the production company: http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/852/The-Wizard-of-Oz/notes.html

And here's the wiki page on Loew's that goes into how they never made films but merely showed them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loews_Cineplex_Entertainment
