or is it just a coincidence that three of the main characters have since died?
Rapper DeShaun Dupree Holton ('Proof') died on April 11 2006, 32 years old. (murder)
Hip hop artist De'Angelo Wilson died on November 26, 2008, 29 years old. (suicide)
Actress Brittany Murphy died on December 20, 2009, 32 years old. (pneumonia, iron deficiency anemia, accidental mix of prescription and over-the-counter drugs).
Murphy's husband Simon Monjack died 5 months later, May 23, 2010, 40 years old. (pneumonia)

Not that I believe in curses, but odd that you didn't also mention director Curtis Hanson among those no longer with us.
