Discussão Nosferatu

I've not watched many silent films. I actually think this is the first one in its entirety. I thought it was as good a moment as any, seeing it reached such a big anniversary. I can't say it blew me away, but in appreciating art for the time it came out in, and the limitation of a certain period, it does some pretty good things. You can't help thinking of all the things that's been clichéd in terms of vampires since this film came out. It's hard to deny its impact, it certainly was a big one, even though it was ordered destroyed after Stoker's heirs sued over the adaptation from Dracula.

What's your experience with this film?? Share your thoughts!! :) And have you watched the remake from 1979?

I saw it in a theater years ago (on Halloween night in the 80s). They even had an organist. It was alright, I just have never been a fan of the silents.

Me neither .... But this movie was a whole different experience ...

Even Haxan for that matter .... way ahead of its time .... And so many horror directors ... were inspired by these 2 films.

Nosferatu (1922) is the only Silent film in my home DVD/Blu-Ray collection. Also the only Silent feature-length film I have see all the way through (and many times). I first watched it in its entirety probably around ten years ago. My main impetus for viewing it was first seeing a clip of the film in King of New York (1990) where a Chinese gangster is watching it in his private cinema, although it was many years before I got around to watching the full film (Nosferatu, I mean; I saw King of New York about a year after its initial release). I have not seen the 1979 version.

For a decent musical score, you might want to try the version from Kino Classics released on Blu-Ray some years back (the 2-disc "deluxe remastered edition") for an improved experience (this is the version I currently own; the feature runs approximately 95 minutes). There was a DVD released by Image Entertainment some time before that which also had a good score (in my opinion), though that version of the film ran shorter, around 81 minutes or so if I remember correctly.

I have watched the BFI restoration....

It's kinda yellow throughout ..... with the subtitles and all...

Oh man, Haxan is great. I forgot about that one. Now I need to hunt down a copy. 😁

It's streaming on HBO. I had it on my list to watch but forgot. My 6-month deal ran out.

You are welcome. I also had Kwaidan on my list because I read ( it was mentioned in the same article along with Haxan) that it was a good 'horror' film.

Kwaidan is amazing, not really in terms of horror but as a great example of Japan's foray into art/surrealism/expressionism, every bit as groundbreaking as the Germans (Nosferatu, Caligari, etc). If you watch it pay attention to bizarre 'unrealistic' touches like random eyes in the sky, or sudden extreme changes in scenery & setting. I think the Japanese took a lesson from German expressionism and Hitchock's Dali period (Spellbound) and built upon it with color. Kinda goes back to the whole idea of the early days of horror being a vehicle for creative visual storytelling. Not really for scares, but really cool psychological stuff.

Heh heh, I just love how we are on the same wavelength. Watched Kwaidan the other night for like the 6th time. I adore the film and as you mentioned, not for the horror aspect but for the artistic expression. It's practically an expressionist canvas come to life cut with Japanese lore. Just fantastic.

Kwaidan (1964) - 8 outta 10 stars

Man you're hardcore, I've only seen it 3x 😂

Yup we both seem to get the cool expressionist angle with these early horror flicks. In Kwaidan especially I read that much of it was filmed inside a giant airplane hangar so the director had total control over every bit of scenery, sky and lighting. And he really went to town with that.

So iirc we had a cool discussion on the meaning of the last segment where the writer gets trapped in a pot of tea. Any new interpretations on that for your 6th time around??

OMG that is the one that really drives me nuts. But Looking back at your assessment on our original conversation on it, I think you have swayed me. It does indeed parallel with what happens in Being John Malkovich . I have to say though, I think I really like the Hochi The Earless story the best. All though all of the stories are really good.
