I agree, can't really remember the reboot in 2013 but this was surprisingly good. Very bloody and reminiscent of The Thing with the merged bodies crawling at the end.

I've seen the reboot again some days ago after its launch.

It's actually pretty good as well.

Evil Dead Rise kept the spirit of the old without compromising the new characters. Without spoiling anything, I'm curious to see if the opening scene has anything to do with a potential sequel. Otherwise, why add it to the movie?

I also felt like Evil Dead 2013 was just trying for shock factor. Extreme gore for the sake of it.

Oh, I definitely agree with that idea. There was a lot of gore for the sake of gore and no other reason in that one. I also disliked how early and messily they disposed of the Jessica Lucas character.
