So I decided to give the old Shudder a go and indulge in trashy horror films for a month. I'm generally well versed with cinematic releases and have a good idea what I want to watch. I know when the next Scorsese film is imminent that it's probably going to be worth my while. But Shudder has presented me with a vast library of films from a certain end of the market, an end of the market I tend to know little about. And that's part of the fun. I may find myself sitting through a lot of crap, but I can sift through a bunch of films and choose one myself with no preconceived notion of it.
Obviously I'm aware of the more well known Shudder exclusives such as Host and Possessor and I'm well versed on the classic cinematic releases they have on there. But some recommendations of the lesser known releases, the Shudder originals and more under the radar stuff would be cool. Any hidden gems you've found on here? Any that are quite well made or a bit elevated? Or just silly fun. What are the best films you've found on here?

I'm not a big horror fan, don't like the gore (love the old-time horror films). I was just perusing Shudder's available movies & I'm curious why they call some of these films Shudder 'Originals'? Would you know the answer?

I couldn't say exactly and I imagine the answer is kind of vague but it would be the same as a Netflix original or Amazon Prime original. I guess it means that Shudder have funded a film from the start of it's production specifically to be shown on Shudder. Although I know that some Netflix originals do get cinematic releases, but the company own them and can do what they want with them. Or they may have bought it at some time during it's production or picked it up after it's been made and the producers are shopping it around but it's been bought with exclusivity.
They are generally what people would subscribe to a streaming service for. Orange is the New Black is a Netflix original so you'd subscribe to Netflix to watch it because you can't watch it anywhere else. Breaking Bad is on Netflix but it's not a Netflix original because it was originally made and owned by AMC.

The reason I asked was, they are saying 'The Curse of La Llorona' is a Shudder 'original'. Every site with info about this movie does not list Shudder or their parent company, AMC, anywhere.

Aah, I see. There are actually two La Llorona films. There's the Blumhouse one. And there's the Shudder original. And both came out fairly recently. I actually intended to watch the Shudder version as it's supposed to be pretty good. Although I'm not sure if "good" means the same thing in the indie horror circuit. Critics seem to be extra forgiving to what is often bargain basement stuff. I guess I'll find out meself soon enough.
Edit: actually I don't think the first version is Blumhouse, my mistake. It's part of the Conjuring universe.

But even the one from Guatemala (2019/2020) isn't really a Shudder original, they are just a distributor?
Also, the one that has Cardellini, directed by Chaves, isn't technically part of The Conjuring universe. Here's an article with an interview with Chaves.

I would guess so, I don't know exactly how it works. They probably have exclusivity to it. I haven't seen it anywhere else
I see, you'd think they'd want it to be part of that universe to market it. I don't really follow that series really. I've seen the first Conjuring but it's not really my thing. Too glossy.

I was wondering the same myself. For example, I learned “The Slasher “ show on shudder now use to be on Netflix and I think Shudder picked up the rights to Slasher in order to continue the show. That would make the newest season a Shudder original. I guess I could have Googled it.

I lost hope in real horror films these days because they are so predictable that include zero scares. It’s seems like all horror are so familiar with no originality, Also, to me , a horror film should not end in victory for good guys.
I recently watched Demonic by Neill Blomkamp (District 9 director) and I thought it was awful, just my opinion.
