Debate Boy Kills World

This movie is a proof that if you know what you are doing and you are actually making a good choices and decisions, then no matter how messy the result will be, it will still be entertaining and interesting to watch it. I have no idea how Moritz Mohr got to direct this movie, it doesn't seem that he has enough credits on his name to be able to access such production. And based on the box office results not sure if he will get another chance again, although I hope he does.

Nevertheless, he got there this time and he actually produced a very well scripted story, with clear characters and clear plotline, plausible motivations, crazy action scenes and a nice twist that turns the movie on its head. And when your script is structured so well, with it has clear internal logic from the start to finish, you can throw everything that can be entertaining inside and create one big giant mess in many scenes, yet somehow everything in this movie feels absolutely necessary and natural. Even the twist comes at the perfect timing just before the catharsis, in order to reshuffle the stakes, refresh the characters and remove the viewer's fatigue so close to the end. This is the exact moment when many other movies fail to deliver a proper script resolution, and just forcefully drag their tired viewers towards the finish line. For example a movie like Gunpowder Milkshake, which starts well and then becomes so heavy and convoluted, that it crosses the finish line by crawling, carrying bulky and inflated plot on its back. But Boy Kills World delivers a big entertaining show all the way through, and sprinting up towards the end. And all that is done with a main character that is mute and deaf while he narrates the story. Incredible.

Very nicely done, Moritz, very nice. The movie is not a box office hit, totally unjustified because it's much better than most of the garbage that Hollywood is releasing nowadays. Argylle, The Fall Guy, Godzilla x Kong, all of these are crap compared to this movie that has much better script and much better director. I really hope some producers will realize that the failure is not an artistic one, but a promotional one, and will give Moritz another chance. Because there is nothing wrong with the movie, it's really good, it was just not marketed correctly.

Also, great to see Bill getting a better recognition and more versatile roles. He is actually a better actor than all of his brothers and it shows. He is deaf and mute in this movie, yet his face and eyes perfectly reflect any smallest emotion that he is feeing inside. Also great to see Yayan Ruhian slowly establishing his cinematic cult status as well. Overall the movie is a great action fun and great entertainment, highly recommended.

Here is an interview (from April 2024) with Mohr you might like.

Yeah, pretty much as I imagined. Good for Sam Raimi for helping them.
