They cause pain in order to elevate your consciousness to a new level where pain and pleasure become indistinguishable. There's a reason none of the Cenobites seem bothered by their predicament. They were all human at one point, but now... they're something more. It's complicated.

Honestly, I think I'd open the box, take them up on their offer.

That is a good way to look at it and it makes sense

Remember the first thing Channard said in Hellraiser 2, after being transformed into a Cenobite: "And to think... I hesitated." He didn't regret it one bit.
