The quintessential heist film

This film never seems to date, arguably the finest actors in our time displaying their craft like the artists they are. The rest of the ensemble cast is just as stellar.
Waingro is one of the most menacing villains I can remember.
Michael Mann directed the film beautifully.
Nothing was left to chance. The shootout scene was one of the most realistic in terms of how they coordinated.
Natalie Portman as an actress on the cusp of stardom also plays a huge role.

Another good Michael Mann move, BUT it needed to be chopped down. There's a lot in the movie that just does not need to be there.

Wow. This one really holds up. And I forgot the deep cast supporting Pacino and DeNiro. It's funny to see the last time the two leads were considered sexy too. But, to my main point this one is just amazing. Tight camera shots and limited dialog and letting action to tell the story. Amazing.

It's a good well-constructed film, overshadowed somewhat by the two protagonists meeting up over coffee.
As great as Pacino and De Niro were, the film was all about _that _scene, which was fine to a point, but looking at the bigger picture was more than the sum of its parts.
And looking back I have always found Mann's "Thief" a superior film

I don't particularly like this movie but Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight owes it a huge debt of gratitude.
