Silvana Mangano (21 April 1930 – 16 December 1989) was an Italian film actress. She was one of a generation of thespians who arose from the neorealist movement, and went on to become a major female star, regarded as a sex symbol in the 1950s and 1960s. She won the David di Donatello for Best Actress three times - for The Verona Trial (1963), The Witches (1967), and The Scientific Cardplayer (1973) – and the Nastro d'Argento for Best Actress twice.

Raised in poverty during World War II, Mangano trained as a dancer and worked as a model before winning a Miss Rome beauty pageant in 1946. This led to work in films; she achieved success in Bitter Rice (1949) and went on to forge a successful career in films, working with many notable directors like Pier Paolo Pasolini, Luchino Visconti, Alberto Lattuada, and Vittorio De Sica. Her career continued well into her 50s, with supporting roles in David Lynch's Dune (1984) and Nikita Mikhalkov Dark Eyes (1987).

Mangano was the wife of international film producer Dino De Laurentiis and had four children with him, including Veronica De Laurentiis and Raffaella De Laurentiis.

Silvana Mangano (Roma, 21 d'abril del 1930 - Madrid, 16 de desembre del 1989) va ser una actriu de cinema italiana. Es va formar com a ballarina i es va ajudar econòmicament com a model. El 1946, amb 16 anys, Mangano va guanyar el concurs de bellesa Miss Roma. Un any més tard, va ser una de les noies del concurs Miss Itàlia. El primer contacte de Mangano amb el cinema va tenir lloc per la seva relació romàntica amb l'actor Marcello Mastroianni. Això la va portar a un contracte, encara que passaria algun temps a pujar a la fama internacional amb la seva impressionant interpretació en Arròs amarg de Giuseppe De Santis, del 1949.

In ihrem Heimatland hatte sie durch Filme wie Alberto Lattuadas Anna einen ähnlichen Bekanntheitsgrad wie Lollobrigida oder Sophia Loren, international war das weniger der Fall. Ab Ende der 1960er-Jahre mehrfach mit Luchino Visconti und Pier Paolo Pasolini. Bei Pasolini spielte sie unter anderem die Mutter in dessen Skandalfilm Teorema – Geometrie der Liebe, für Visconti die Mutter von Tadzio in Tod in Venedig, die Cosima Wagner in Ludwig II. und die materialistische Ehefrau eines Industriellen in Gewalt und Leidenschaft. Ab Mitte der 1970er-Jahre stand sie seltener vor der Kamera, im Jahr 1984 hatte sie eine Nebenrolle in David Lynchs Science-Fiction-Film Der Wüstenplanet.
