The Movie Database Support

Not sure if this is an actual error/bug or maybe I’m just misunderstanding how to use the site:

If I search via the main search box on the root page of the site (www.themoviedb.org) with ‘Ranma ½ (1989)’ it returns matches for ‘The Brave Frog’ and ‘Salvador Dali:Early Diaries’ and no matches for anything related to Ranma

Searching with ‘Ranma ½ 1989’ also doesn’t find it, but ‘Ranma ½ y:1989’ does find it, also ‘Ranma ½’ does find it.

If I do the same search with ‘Violet Evergarden (2018)’ for example, it returns that series as the only search result without me having to mess around with the year in special ways

On the show page for Violet Evergarden, the title shows exactly as I searched above ‘Violet Evergarden (2018)’ and is found. https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/75214-violet-evergarden

On the show page for Ranma, the title shows exactly as I searched above ‘Ranma ½ (1989)’ and is not found. https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/57706

I also tried with ‘Attack on Titan (2013)’ and ‘Kill La Kill (2013)’, both of which don’t show up with the year but do if you remove the year (same behaviour as Ranma). So maybe it is the Violet Evergarden page that is incorrect by being found more easily?

Personally, I would prefer if the search finds the shows by the title which appears at the top of their respective pages. This also happens to the be the same way the start of my media files are named and so I’m more used to searching like that.

I know people don’t like comparisons with IMDB, but their search does not seem to have these ‘issues’ and just finds it whether you add a year in brackets or not

In our database, the year is not part of the title, but is a separate field.

The only correct way to do a search with the release year is to use the syntax "title y:year".

On the top of the different movies/series page, you don't have just the title, but title followed by the year in parenthesis. This year is not part of the title.

How do you explain a search for ‘Violet Evergarden (2018)’ working and finding it then?

Does it? https://www.themoviedb.org/search?query=Violet%20Evergarden%20(2018)
