Well, he plays a different character and he can leave the over acting to his younger partner, rookie Romano.

He doesn't over act in Boston Legal either.

I am going to go out on a very precarious limb and say I like William Shatner - he was hilarious in Third Rock from the Sun and very watchable in Boston Legal. I like a person who can make fun of themselves - it's a change from all the self important pomposity you get from lesser actors.
