Debate X-Men '97

I'm curious what your thoughts are on the finale's conflict between Xavier and Magneto.

Personally, I don't understand the X-Men's negative attitude towards Magneto. Yes, he's threatening the lives of every living creature on the planet but they behave as though while he was in control of the X-Men he had them going around terrorizing people, and then there's Xavier. Prime Sentinels are slaughtering mutants around the world and you won't even give your X-Men the time they need to disable Bastion before stopping Magneto when he's the only reason the Prime Sentinels are offline? What was the plan if they failed? Wait for the Avengers to help? The Avengers who are too busy protecting POTUS in his bunker? Irreversible damage to the planet, I get it, but you're risking the literal violent extinction of your species and every human on the planet who supports mutants, and this is even before Bastion goes full scorched Earth and decides to just kill everyone.

Speaking of Bastion... I have a serious problem with superhero cartoons and I have a serious problem with X-Men 97. Do we really need to be having heart-to-heart exposition in the middle of an ongoing battle? Phoenix doesn't obliterate Bastion or Sinister even after all the atrocities they've committed and obviously will commit in the future, then, instead of immediately securing either of them, everyone has a group hug, giving Bastion the time he needs to recover and beat the snot out of all of them AGAIN!

Bastion means to kill or enslave all mutants and has the power to do it but Storm is against taking away that power even temporarily (since she didn't permanently lose hers, we have no reason to believe the effect is permanent), Wolverine allows his blind hatred for Magneto and disdain for Cyclops to consume him and tries to murder Magneto, and Xavier is hell-bent on proving he's a good guy by sacrificing all of his "children", and Magneto is supposedly the antagonist here?

I don't agree with Magneto's actions but I don't agree with Xavier or his X-Men either... and can we stop saying "To me, my X-Men!"?!

Maybe I'm just weary from the never-ending real-world bigoted buffoonery, but what nonsense is this?

Maybe I'm forgetting that while it's been almost 30 years for us, it's only been "yesterday" for these characters and it's "irrational" of me to expect they've matured.

P.S.: No, I can't remember much about the original series. I watched that on the tele when I was a child. I highly doubt we even aired all the episodes. I didn't even know Xavier got assassinated by whatshisface in the original run.
