Murray Hamilton played "Big Daddy", the father of Blanche (Rue McClanahan). Their ages seemed off so I checked and yup, he was barely 9 years older than her. Also, sadly, looks like he died right around the time the episode aired in 1986.

Is that why they killed him off? That seems classy in retrospect. They handled it well
