Příběh mladé šlechtičny Centaine de Thiry, která se zamiluje do jihoafrického pilota Michaela Courtneye. Je 1. sv. válka a v den svatby je Michael zabit. Centaine opouští svou vlast se svou tetou Annou a rozhodne se odjet do Afriky a tam porodit jeho dítě. Cestou je loď přepadena německým torpédem a potopí se. Centaine se na loďce po dlouhé cestě dostává k pobřeží Afriky. Snaží se dojít pěšky do Kapského města k Michaelově rodině. Cestou potká dva křováky, kteří se o ni postarají a naučí ji jak přežít v buši. Porodí chlapce Šasu.

Die lebenslustige Comtesse Centaine de Thiry verliert Anfang des 20. Jh. ihren Verlobten Michael Courteney. Die schwangere Centaine macht sich auf den Weg von Frankreich in sein Heimatland Südafrika, um das Kind dort zur Welt zu bringen. Unterwegs erleidet sie Schiffbruch, wird an Land gespült und von den Eingeborenen Hani und Owi aufgenommen. Sohn Shasa kommt zur Welt. Centaine verliebt sich in den Rebellen Lothar de la Rey (Derek de Lint) und bekommt auch von ihm einen Sohn, Manfred. Certaine entdeckt, dass Lothar ein Verbrecher ist, als er Hani und Owi tötet, und verlässt ihn und Manfred. Durch den Kauf einer Diamantenmine wird sie zur reichsten Frau Afrikas. Lothar sinnt auf Rache und die Zerstörung ihres Imperiums. In einem dramatischen Finale kommt es zum Kampf zwischen Certaine und Shasa und Lothar und Manfred, ohne dass Manfred oder Shasa wissen, dass sich gerade alles innerhalb der Familie abspielt.
