On the other hand, he seems to be asking Fran not to help him in his scientific project and perhaps Fran will be completely uninterested.

Now, things look good because they are resolving that position by agreeing that a successful marriage needs a compromise. In the meantime, Fran vows to be more paper while Maxwell is to be less ready for that moment, as they are trying to embrace new personalities differently.
