It seems that George was always complaining that he was given less than his own kids get, his dad walked out on them and that he was abused.

But Benny does seem to really like George to some extent. She wants his picture when they move away, was late for a bus when the earthquake struck and was working at the factory to put a roof over their head. Not leaving much else. She wouldn't let him drive the car as she was afraid he'd wreck it, they would be screwed or he would die.

Sure they make jokes at each other's expense but they are in each other's lives and love one another.
