Just saw this (2-part) episode again, and I still don't get how it all was supposed to work. If Petty Officer Kevin Lee was thought to be Seaman Dunsmore who had deserted, why didn't they check his fingerprints etc and discover that he wasn't really Seaman Dunsmore? All they knew before was that he wasn't who he was pretending to be then. If he claimed to be Seaman Dunsmore, they should have checked. It's difficult to see why he would claim to be Dunsmore, since he would/should have known he could be facing a murder charge of Kevin Lee, plus desertion. Does it really make sense that they would have planned to go with the murder charge because they already planned on how to beat it? I'm not sure that makes a lot of sense.
But perhaps even more troubling, are we - the audience - supposed to believe that none of those lawyers ever saw Witness For The Prosecution?
