There is still plenty of story for Vikings to tell. The show should have no problems surviving the loss of Ragnar and Ecbert - there is still Lagertha and Bjorn and Ivar. Not to mention whoever NEW they bring onto the show.
The actor playing Ivar is exceptional. He is charismatic and I loved that Ivar was attracted to the violence he saw in Jonathan Rhys Meyers' bishop. The face-offs in the middle of battle are done exceptionally well, showing the tumult and chaos on the field while those we're familiar with meet up. I'm lovin' it.
Hi Invidia! It's been a while since we've looked at the same show. The actor playing Ivar is an attention grabber, good looking and indeed charismatic. So I have to disagree with you. I love him. Yes his character is an SOB, but I always look forward to his scenes, lol. Yes, I would prefer to see him in something where I could imagine him in a different light, but if Vikings is it, I'll watch. They've taken so many liberties with Viking history, who knows what they'll actually do with his character. Maybe you'll get your wish and see his come-uppence soon. I hope not.
Honestly Invidia, I don't know if Rollo will team up with Ivar against Lagertha. I think if anyone can try for peace, it might be Rollo. But that said, they would all have to go against King Harald. I don't think Harald will go for any of that.
I don't think we can look at history to find what Hirst wants to write for Rollo. I'm pretty sure that Rollo is anachronistic to these earlier Viking sagas, so they can have him do pretty much anything in this story line. At some point, Alfred the Great's son will join and tighten the sparse Saxon tribes to form what we recognize as England. I think they'll have Rollo first moving some of the Vikings to live within Saxony. Eventually they blend in peacefully of course. I have no idea what they plan for Lagertha and Heahmund. Ivar throwing shade to Heahmund in battle made my blood run cold. Yeah, you're right Ivar is repulsively sociopathic, but I can't wait to see what happens next with those two.
My head is spinning. But I think Alfred will become the star of the show the next season down from this one. Lagertha, Ivar and the Bishop's drama will be center stage for quite a while probably. Bishop Heahmund did seem to become infatuated with Lagertha in a relatively short time. He seems capable of becoming her enemy just as fast, especially if he sees her weaknesses. Heahmund is as much of a crazy man as Ivar is. They are both like a dog with a bone. This show makes it difficult for me to look at Viking history and absorb it to memory as they've mashed up so many characters and time periods. I think you're onto something though, I think Lagertha is in trouble because of catching Heahmund's affections. He's too close. If he changed his mind and wanted to help out Ivar, he could destroy her so quickly. I wonder what they're going to write for her.
I didn't even remember that, or I missed it, that the Seer gave her that message. Wow, so Bjorn will probably make a move in her interest that she doesn't agree with. Do you think Bjorn will arrange for her to marry Harald? She'll be a surprising and somewhat fitting replacement, though she'll be against it. It may save her life. And maybe in anger she'll fill Harald in on the details of what really happened on the battlefield and why. Yikes. Yes, it's true that maybe Rollo could take both her and Heahmund back with him. That would be another messy triangle, lol. And Floki in Iceland! I loved seeing him come ashore so much. To have everything start to fall apart like that is heartbreaking . What do you think will become of Floki? We know the Vikings were successful in Iceland, but how long will it take to come about? Do you think that maybe Bjorn and Lagertha would ever take off together to Iceland?
Ha! I forgot that Lagertha had mounted Harald when she had him chained! "Woman what are you doing?" lol. Yes, she can always lie and tell him she's carrying his baby. Or maybe it will be true! I guess it would be to her advantage not to let Harald know about her and Astrid. But I don't think Bjorn would ever turn against her just to reign in Kattegat. I think he might find relocating her the only way to save her life. I'm also wondering about next season. I think this is a short wait 'til April, but that might be wishful thinking. Not that they're as interesting, but what did you think about Ubbe and Torvi? I don't see any big moves coming from their pairing, but it will create a lot of soap drama, I think.
Much as I hate to say it, I really think it's time for Lagertha to die off.
I love the character and enjoy looking at the lovely Katherine Winnick, but Lagertha's entire generation at this point in the show are elderly. And here she is still beautiful and relatively youthful looking. I showed a co-worker a cast picture from the past season and pointed out Lagertha and Bjorn in there just to see the look on his face when I told him that she was his mother. Couldn't argue with the "No way!" I got in response.
Just pushing the suspension of disbelief beyond the limit at this point.

it's obviously not going to be the same without the almighty Ragnar but i think the brothers has what it takes to keep the show going

I loved Ragnar, but I've seriously enjoyed the show in his absence. Vikings will be fine without him.
