At its best, back in the 90's, I think it's fair to say that The Simpsons was some of the best television, certainly some of the best comedy, ever produced.
Since then, however, there's been a drastic decline in quality and at this stage the inferior episodes outnumber the good by a considerable margin.
I suppose the best thing to do is to just rate the individual seasons.

Yeah, it just keeps dragging on and on. I haven't watch it in years so I can't comment on the quality of the recent episodes, but I remember a gradual drop starting around season 11. I moved on from the Simpsons around season 20.
I was buying the DVDs but they stopped releasing physical copies.

For me, the show has been unwatchable since 1999. 1989 & 1990 were funny, but still establishing the characters and tropes. 1991-1997 were hilarious, with almost every episode being golden. 1998 was 50/50.
It is a shame because most of the show's run has been crap. The bad stuff diminishes people's memory of the good. stuff. Like a film series that goes on and on and on until it becomes a joke.

I was just thinking the same thing...saw it on the main page and thought,"Hey, I bet I've never rated The Simpsons!" Then I struggled with how to rate it. Like most of you I haven't watched it in years, and yet, I have to give it a nod because is has endured for so long, has covered so many cultural issues and has been on point so many times. I was torn between a 6 or 7, ended up dropping a 7 just because the creators are so prolific.
Comments like above ("Dropped out after season 20") shows the ridiculous nature of this show's endurance. Wow. I mean, someone's got to be watching it, right?

Ha, I intentionally left it unrated because seasons 2-8 are my favorite show of all time. Anything after that is complete garbage.

Yeah, it had a decade or so of glory then slumped. It has been dreck for far longer than it was on top.
To be fair, I haven't watched a new episode now for several years but I've never seen anyone claim any gems in that period.
The last episode I watched (on a flight so perhaps I'm more forgiving) which I quite enjoyed was The Debarted, which is quite some years back.

Yeah same for me. I have Seasons 1-9 on dvd, but stopped caring after the Tomacco episodes and such.

I was thinking the same problem, The Simpsons today is an absolutely horrible TV show but back in the 1990s, this show was absolutely fantastic and was genuinely funny as an all-time classic. People have often theorised when The Simpsons stopped being a thoughtful and creative show to become the lifeless abomination it has become, in fact many hardcore fans now believe that the Simpsons today is not the same show as "Classic" Simpsons and is actually a different show that many now come to call as "Zombie Simpsons". Some say Season 8 was where things started to change for the worse while many say the Season 9 episode "The Principal and the Pauper" was the episode that killed the Simpsons. In general I'll only give the show a 5/10 as a "half and half" way between the two versions of the Simpsons, one good, the other bad.
