Discuss Marvel's Iron Fist

I really don't get what all the fuss is about. From what I've been hearing, this was supposed to have been the worst thing to have ever graced our screens.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's anything groundbreaking by any means. It's not onto anything new. But it's reasonably entertaining and fairly well made. There hasn't been any moment where I've been bored. As I say, I've only seen 4 episodes so maybe it takes a swift nosedive in episode 5.

With all the horribly made stuff you get on the Sci-Fi channel and things like The Vampire Diaries, dull, episodic nonsense like Agents of Shield and all those shoddy Buffy wannabees, how is this so detested in comparison?

It's certainly no Daredevil but I'd say it's at least of equal quality to Luke Cage, probably slightly better. And Cage never got the hate this does. A bit of indifference maybe, but not outright derision.

I'm only 4 episodes in but so far it's more interesting than Luke Cage. Luke Cage I've watched about 6 episodes of and it just seems to keep going downhill. I might just abort the show completely and finish Iron Fist.

It's weird. I keep hearing how bad it is from indirect sources. But every person I actually speak to seems to enjoy it. It seems impossible to actually get an answer from one of these naysayers. I honestly thought I was gonna get a barrage of hate from people telling me how stupid I am for liking this.

And I'm now 6 episodes in and still liking it.

I liked the first seven or eight episodes. I got a bit tired of it after that, but that's the case for a lot of shows.

I hear the opposite from most people. They hated the early episodes, and liked a few of the later ones.

I watched episode 6 this morning. This was the episode directed by the Rza and it was awesome. This show is much better than Luke Cage and I'm even slightly enjoying it a little more than Jessica Jones. Jessica Jones was only interesting because of the villain. Daredevil and Iron Fist are the most interesting characters to me because of their martial arts backgrounds. I think the other two have boring super powers. I wish Marvel would do away with the other characters and give us a Moon Knight series. Oh well, if the Defenders turns out to not be any good at least we have the Punisher.

I finished the entire series today. I like it a lot. I don't compare it to the other Marvel netflix series' because they are all different and they all stand on their own. I think Iron Fist is good and I think practically all of the complaints I have seen on the internet are unfounded.

I think "The Defenders" is going to be awesome.

Yeah, I loved that episode. The action really seems to be kicking in now. And hell, yeah, I can't wait for The Punisher. I'm surprised they haven't got him in The Defenders. That would be great!

Yeah, I liked all those series to an extent. Luke Cage was my least favourite, but even that had some good qualities in it. I thought Cottonmouth was great and a much more interesting villain than Diamondback.

Yeah, I thought Cottonmouth was a great character too. I have enjoyed all of the Marvel Netflix series' so far.

I just finished the first season last night. For over two months, I've been hearing poor review and negative comments about Iron Fist from various YouTube channels every time Marvel releases details of an upcoming project. My brother said that this is his favorite of the Marvel Netflix shows, and I'd rank it at the top along with Daredevil. I really don't understand all the negativity about this show.

Yeah, I finished it a while ago and enjoyed it up to the end. I can see an element of truth to some of the complaints. But those issues are nowhere near enough to warrant the vehemently low regard this show has spawned. They say Finn Jones was wooden and the choreography was horrible.

Yes, Jones was a bit wooden. But was this the first time an enjoyable tv show has a questionable thesp at the fore? The only thing more wooden than Sarah Michele Gellar was her stakes. Lets be fair, we didn't like her for her emoting.

The choreography wasn't great. But it wasn't bad. Remember, we're watching a tv show here, not a film. Fight scenes are massively expensive and time consuming to shoot. As a result, great tv show choreography is extremely rare. Daredevil and Banshee are the only shows I can think of with better fight scenes than Iron Fist. Daredevil is a Netflx flagship show and clearly cost a bomb. Banshee was cancelled. I would imagine because viewing figures could not make up for the cost of those fights. The majority of fighting in tv shows is very uninspiring. Again, remember Buffy. And the reason I keep referring to Buffy is not because it was bad by any means. I'm referring to it because it's well regarded. In comparison to these other shows, Iron Fist's fights scrub up pretty well. But people seem to be holding it up to a different bar.

These same people seem to ignore the show's plus points too.

Ward Meechum was a great character with a fantastic arc. In fact, the relationship between the Meechum's and the whole white collar storyline was very interesting. Probably more interesting than Danny Rand's mystical side of the story.

The show also wove some dark and adult themes into the mix. Themes such as abuse, drug addiction and indoctrination. Something a superhero property should be praised for exploring. And it was all pretty well filmed too.

Or we could all go watch Ghost Whisperer if that's more to your liking.

I've watched all 13 episodes as well and I too don't get the hate. I mean, obviously it's not as good as Daredevil but not many shows are. It's far more interesting and well crafted than most of the DC CW shows if I'm being honest.

Exactly correct.

Spot on. It's way better than the DC shows because it aims higher. The makers actually put care and thought into it. The DC shows are just point and shoot. Characters stand perfectly still and exchange dialogue woodenly. They're sort of enjoyable in a very trashy way but they're a joke next to the Marvel Netflix shows.

i'm at episode 7 and i am struggling. this series is pretty terrible. not the worse thing ever, but vastly inferior to the other three defender solo series. i did not like jessica jones very much but that is mainly because i found her as a character highly objectionable. it also had some pacing problems two thirds of the way through the series, as did luke cage (which i enjoyed very much). this on the other hand has much more serious problems. a bland leading man who is not convincing at all as a martial artist, pedestrian pacing, and very inconsistent characterisation, as shown by ward suddenly becoming a junkie. where did that come from? added to that , the character of danny rand is just annoying. he veers from emotional instability to naivety within moments. he's erratic, and i don't buy for a second that he is some sort of master of mental discipline that spend a decade in a monastery. this series is a mess. i will finish it, only because it will act as a gateway to the defenders

Ok. It's good to hear the other side of things. Your comments are fair. I won't address them because I think I've pretty much already covered my stance on them all above and I have nothing new to add. Except for the Ward/Junkie thing. It was a while ago I watched it now so my memory is hazy, but wasn't he always a junkie? The show just didn't reveal that side of his character straight away, it's something that he'd managed to keep hidden. And given the way he'd been treated by his father all his life, it would make sense that he would have turned to drugs.

But as a representative of the naysayers of the show, I'm curious what you think. Lets take a couple of examples of shows that I think we can all agree are terrible. Ghost Whisperer or Baywatch Nights. Put Iron Fist alongside them. Can you see a difference? Do you see the aesthetics of production as being the same level? I ask because this is the aura that many have painted the show with and am wondering if you genuinely think that's accurate.

i can't comment as i have never watched ghost whisperer or baywatch nights. i'm from england - ghost whisperer did screen here, but it did not appeal to me. i don't know if baywatch nights was shown over here. i'll make a final judgement on iron fist once i have finished this series, but on the basis of what i have seen so far, the odds on watching a second series are zero, unless they sack the leading man and the writers up their game.
