Posting here as the show was announced three years ago and since then... nothing. The showrunner is currently associated with "Dune: The Sisterhood" by some sources, so it's probably dead in the water.

I'm not sure that it would have worked, unless the plan was to just take the basic concept of "a hotel that helps ghosts move on to the afterlife" and make something fairly episodic. However what, I suspect, made the Korean original so beloved is the concept of Man-Wol's centuries-long penance and that devastating reveal; there just isn't enough history in the US to allow for that, even if they made her Indigenous American.

I guess they could have started in Europe and have the latest incarnation of the hotel in the US, but a lot of the mythology would have needed reworking. Another option might have been to set it in a "fantasy" world, but I think then the modern parts would have been too jarring - or expensive if they had redressed things to make it obvious we weren't in "our" world. A Korean-set remake with more of a "Western" sensibility might have worked, but would seem a bit pointless (and would many Americans watch?).

Probably the best option would have been to start in Korea and have the hotel move across Europe to America, picking up staff at locations along the way. If the show is still going ahead and someone uses any of the ideas above to get over the hump, a paid set visit for my wife and me plus 4K UHD disks, please!

The most recent article I could find was from July 2022.

I watch a lot of Korean TV shows (although I haven't seen this one) & films. And my experience is that remakes by other countries (especially the US) are usually inferior.

Thanks. I looked at Ms Schapker's Twitter a while back, but she doesn't seem to have posted since speaking out against the Trumpaloompa in '21. The Cosmo article quotes a 2020 piece as its source so I'm still standing by my initial assessment of the project having ground to a halt. That said, "The Meg" was optioned as soon as the book was released in 1997 but it wasn't until 2018 that your man Jason got to punch a shark.

I'd heartily recommend "Hotel del Luna". As you've watched other Korean shows, you will be used to the mugging/gurning in the "humorous" bits already, though in my limited viewing I haven't seen other shows that stop the plot for a photomontage recap set to a revolving selection of saccharine Korean pop ballads at least once per episode. Admittedly, I have since added the instrumental version of Punch's "Done for Me" to my Spotify library. It took us three or four episodes to get into it, but we burned through the rest fairly quickly. Mme LeMarchand is rarely emotionally moved by TV/films but was visibly affected by the reveal about the hotel's first guest in one of the climactic episodes and described the show as "achingly romantic", and let's just say that my hay-fever flared up something rotten in the final episode.

We haven't watched much K-stuff as the ones we tried after falling in love with "Hotel del Luna", which was the first K-Show that my wife and I tried*, just didn't grab us to such a degree. However, "Crash Landing on You" mentioned in the Cosmo piece is on the "to try" list. As they say, it's hard to see how they can make it work in another setting, though I can understand why people see the need to try to make their "own versions" of hits from other regions of the world: The old "want someone who looks like me" thing (though this only tends to work if you're white or black in US/UK productions) and "don't like subtitles" come to mind. Also, sensibilities differ (like the aforementioned humour). Some remakes can be OK, like the US version of https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/17174-ghosts?language=en-GB and (not my thing) the US version of https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/2996-the-office?language=en-GB lasted longer than the UK one. It's not just the English-speakers who are at it, either. Various European countries did their own take on https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/2430-doc-martin?language=en-GB .

*I started "Kingdom" separately as she won't watch anything labelled "horror" despite sticking with "Supernatural" for 15 LONG years.

I have a Viki account so I will give the first couple of episodes a go (maybe this weekend).
