May I ask a question of Justin & Murray?

Haha, you make that sound serious. What is it?

No not really, I just can't figure out whether you are a boy or a girl? Not like it's a big deal but I look at all the lists and with some it's easy? Others not so much. If you do not want to answer, no worries.

I am polygender. I experience multiple gender identities.

No, I am a guy. Justin is a guys name :p

I'm guessing Murray is a guy because I've never known of a woman by that name. I assumed you were a guy at first, Bratface. But I'm guessing you are a girl.

Apologies if I'm wrong on either of those.

@JustinJackFlash Whenever I see your avatar/username I always think of the band The Darkness... The lightning bolt tattoo that singer Justin Hawkins has as well as the name...!

Haha. I'm not sure that's a good thing. But the name/avatar is supposed to be cheesy so I guess The Darkness fits there.

Nah that's cool, I crew for bands and worked for The Darkness a few times - they're really nice guys - but yeah if cheesy is what you're going for...! :)

Skid Row, Misfits, Stranglers, Brian May, Gary Numan (loads of times - very nice guy), Duff McKagen (GnR) Feeder, Hawkwind, Terrorvision, Sisters of Mercy, Goldfrapp, Fun Lovin' Criminals, Public Enemy... Loads of others... I've been doing it for a while now...!!

Whoa! That is a lot. Sounds like an awesome job. I guess you get to watch them perform too.

I am a woman. The reason I asked was that not all screen names/avatars are obvious, you thought I was a guy but both of the avatars I use are images of a young girl. What made you think I was a guy? The reason I ask is, I use the same screen name & image at this site (Fark) and some there thought I was a guy.

Some of the lists (not just yours) have movies that are pretty much what people would call 'guy' movies (heavy action, etc) but then they added some that are big 'chick flicks'. Curiosity got the best of me.

Sorry for hijacking this thread Yeah it's good, but the hours are long and can be tedious... Yep get to watch the bands and hang out if they're about and I'm done until the show - usually watch from side of stage as I'm one of the guys who runs on to pick up mic stands, drum breakables and clear sh*t up...

Haha you are correct, I’m a guy, although Murray is my surname so that’s not a giveaway!

@rudely_murray Why 'rudely' though? @bratface same question

What made you think I was a guy?

Honest answer? I was just being doopid. I assumed you were a guy at first, but I wasn't really thinking. After reading a couple of your posts it was pretty clear from the way you talk and your tastes that you are probably not a guy. But when I'm on a film site my default assumption tends to be that everyone I'm talking to is a guy (unless their username clearly indicates otherwise).

The reason for this is that it's been my experience that most people who are hardcore film enthusiasts usually tend to be male. On my film course there were about 200 guys and about 15 girls. So it just seems to be a subject that is usually just a casual interest at best for women. So I'm just not really expecting them to be here. Though there does seem to be a lot of girls on this site. And times do seem to be changing.

Some of the lists (not just yours) have movies that are pretty much what people would call 'guy' movies (heavy action, etc) but then they added some that are big 'chick flicks'. Curiosity got the best of me.

I think there is a big misconception around men not watching 'chick flicks'.

The reason we don't like watching How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days or The Runaway Bride is because they are not very good. Not because they are about romance or love. I'm sorry to say this but I see about 95% of romance films are just not being very good. They are stereotypical, predictable and run of the mill. Their style is usually very, very similar. They very rarely have anything to say or explore.

But when a film about romance is genuinely interesting I tend to really, really like them. I adore Before Sunrise. It's one of my fave films. The central characters are likable, interesting and identifiable. They talk and philosophise about fascinating things that I relate to. It's more real. I like (500) Days of Summer because I relate to it and it has something to convey. I like The Wedding Singer because it has a great 80's spin on a familiar concept. I'm given reason to enjoy these films whereas I'm usually not given much reason to enjoy the latest Reese Witherspoon fluff.

Compare these films to 'guy' films. Robocop and The Bourne Supremacy are both 'guy' action films but they couldn't be more different. Robocop is heavily satirical and a very different style. Bourne is exploring identity and is quite docu-style and gritty.

I'm not criticizing women for enjoying 'chick flicks'. I'm saying they are not given much choice by studios who don't put a lot of effort into these films. And they produce a lot more male oriented films than female. So unfortunately Men are given a lot more options when it comes to films than women are.

Justin,

Being a woman doesn't necessarily mean we like 'chick flicks'. I like a few: Love Actually, The Holiday, Last Holiday but that is because of the Christmas theme & the actors involved (except for Jack Black in The Holiday, in my opinion his casting was a big mistake). But as a rule I do not watch them. I do like a lot of so called 'action' films, Hong Kong action/crime films, the Craig Bond films, etc.. Don't care for the films that star Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Cruise, the mainstream action films.

I love foreign films, I was lucky back when I started watching foreign films there was a small video store in my neighborhood that had a large foreign section. I'd go through periods when I watch exclusively films from one country, then move on to other countries.

I was born in the 50's so I have been watching movies for a long time. We regularly went to the movies (in grade school we would usually go every Saturday, sometimes just me & my sister, sometimes with parents (the drive-in).
