Debate Prince of Darkness

... Easily Carpenters worst film... So far for me.

I'm going through his films I never got round to seeing yet, In the Mouth of Madness is next on the list and then I think I've seen them all, but this is so dull and badly acted... I'm 14 minuets from the end and I can't wait for for the credits to roll...

I WATCH IT EVERY 10 YEARS OR SO THINKING "ITS JOHN CARPENTER..ITS BETTER THAN I REMEMBER.LETS TRY AGAIN"...NO,ITS BAD AND DISJOINTED AND SLOW AND DARK AND JUST PLAIN STUPID.

It's one of my favourites! Obviously shot on a low budget, but I love the atmosphere.

Hey, good for you! We can't all like the same things, the atmosphere was there but for me it wasn't enough to carry the film... 👍

Just checked JC's filmography, and I'd go as far as to say that it beats anything he's done since (including "They Live") and is only just outside his Top 5 films in my list. Though like you say, everyone's got different tastes. (I don't get the love for Big Trouble).

@M. LeMarchand Fair play, BTILC is one of my favourites, The Thing and The Fog (which I can see why people might not like) are up there too... I'm still looking forward to In the Mouth of Madness, but for me he stopped being great after Big Trouble...

THEY LIVE IS ONE BADASS FLICK.BTILC IS AWESOME.PRINCE AND FOG ARE BOTH MUDDLED MESSES.IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS HAS SO MUCH PROMISE AND FAILS TO DELIVER THE GOODS IN A ENJOYABLE ARRANGEMENT.

Like I said, The Fog has its problems... But I first watched it when I was real young on holiday by the sea so it left an impresseion! Agreed, They Live is badass, some great scenes and one I own on bluray (steelbook!) but as a whole it just falls short (for me) of being classic Carpenter... Halloween, The Thing, Escape From L. A. but still one that gets repeat viewings.

THAT IS WHY I LOVE MANNEQUIN.MY AUNT GAVE ME A VHS COPY WHEN I WAS A KID.DAMN YOUUUUUU AUNT NANCY!

Haha! Never saw Mannequin, but I guess we all have a reason for our guilty pleasures grin

By and large, I didn't really "get" this movie. But the bit with the mirror portal gave me nightmares, and I still remember it vividly to this day.

This is one of those movies that was nightmare inducing in its TIME! The movie has a somber, atmospheric & dreadful feel to it. The ending was also very haunting (the coming Apocalypse). But if your seeing now, for the first time in 2019..I can only imagine how crappy it must be. lol. Not all 80s horror have aged well.

That said, I didn't care for it too much, but over the years, it has grown on me and I have a newfound appreciation for this movie.

Yeah, I really wanted to like it... It had so many things going for it, John Carpenter, mid-late 80s horror, low budget, I remember the video case in my local shop being really cool (so throw nostalgia in the mix)... But it really didn't age well and I didn't find it scary at all... I still get unnerved by some films to this day, but I guess things that people find scary in films are only relative to them and their fears... Ah well, had a read up and watched some clips of In The Mouth of Madness and that looks like a better film...

If you haven't seen In The Mouth of Madness, I have to recommend it. It's one of my favorites, alongside The Thing, Dark City, etc.
